HAO Scientists prepare for Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse of Feb. 1980 as seen from IndiaScientists at NCAR's High Altitude Observatory (HAO) are busy preparing for the total eclipse of the Sun coming up on August 21st. HAO's eclipse blog describes some of the research that HAO's solar astronomers will be conducting during the eclipse. In a recent post, "Counting Down to the Eclipse", student interns Alyssa Boll and Keon Gibson explain about some of the observations they will be helping with... including use of a special camera inspired by the peculiar eyes of mantis shrimps.

Check out our Solar Eclipse 2017 page for games and interactives about the eclipse, background information about aspects of the Sun revealed during solar eclipses, and pointers to sites with eclipse observing tips.

HAO also provides some excellent info about the history of eclipse viewing through the ages on their Great American Eclipse page, as well as an archive of images from past eclipses.
