Weather Balloon Launch Video

U.S. National Weather Service

In this video from the U.S. National Weather Service, a scientist explains how weather balloons are used to collect data that improves weather predictions. Watch and learn how weather balloons and the package of instruments they carry (called sondes) are prepared and launched. These balloons rise to about 100,000 feet in the atmosphere before they pop and the sonde travels back to the ground attached to a small parachute.
