Join NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) meteorologist and scientific program manager Dr. Jason Knievel in this thought provoking session on wildfires. Wildfires are natural and inevitable. They are essential components of many ecosystems. While there are benefits to good fires, there are certainly bad fires with detrimental effects, and those bad fires are getting worse. In the United States, the cost of wildfires is roughly 2–4% of GDP, double the cost of floods. Minimizing the burden of bad fires and maximizing the benefits of good ones is the shared goal of researchers and practitioners across myriad sectors of society. Please join Dr. Jason Knievel to learn about how NSF NCAR’s Research Applications Laboratory is doing its part to study wildfires; to learn about how they are affected by weather, climate, and other environmental factors; and to translate that work into information, technology, safety, and practices that benefit society.

After the presentation, hear about resources for your classroom related to wildfires from the UCAR Center for Science Education.

This webinar is hosted by the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) as part of their Science Updates web series.
