Join us for this session hosted by Colorado Springs PALS (Peak Area Leadership in Science). With 80% of the U.S. population living in cities, urban heat islands intersect with the everyday lives of millions of people. Temperatures in urban areas tend to be hotter than rural areas due to the built environment of concrete, roads, and structures that absorb and radiate heat. In this session, we’ll explore how urban heat touches our lives through the lenses of ecological, economic, and social perspectives.

Studying heat also lends itself to PBL investigations, especially for students pursuing the Colorado Seal of Climate Literacy endorsement. Building upon our understanding, we’ll carve out shared work time to brainstorm possible PBL investigations, along with ideas for student-driven solutions and community action.  We’ll also share related, free SciEd resources for your classroom in support of your teaching.
