Warming a Mylar Balloon

Lesson 5: How does air move and change as a storm is forming?

GLOBE Weather/UCAR

Use the Warming a Mylar Balloon video with Lesson 5: Steps 1-2, How does air move and change when a storm is forming? of the GLOBE Weather curriculum.

In the Warming a Mylar Balloon demonstration, warmed air molecules move more and are more spread apart as indicated by the expanding and rising balloon, while air molecules that have cooled move less and are closer together as indicated by the sinking balloon. This demonstration illustrates the process of convection.
