Solar Chromosphere Eclipse Photo

The chromosphere peaks out as a thin, brightly colored ring during a solar eclipse.

The colorful chromosphere is seen shining out around the edges of the Moon when viewed during a total solar eclipse, when the bright surface of the Sun is blocked.

This photo shows the Sun during a total solar eclipse on August 11, 1999. The solar chromosphere is visible as a thin band of light, mostly red, around the Sun. The chromosphere is the lower part of the Sun's atmosphere.
